# Keep the PSD layers you still need.

The useful distinction is what the next person must change. A picture of a composition and the composition itself are different deliverables.

## Choose PSD for future editing

Use a layered project when someone needs to move an object, change text or revisit a mask. The PhotoCraft project documents layered PSD support. Confirm those parts survive in your actual downloaded file rather than relying on the filename.

## Choose PNG for the finished image

Use PNG when the recipient needs the visible pixels. It can retain transparent pixels, but it does not retain the PSD’s editable text and layer objects. A PNG is suitable for a flat preview or image handoff.

## Check whether the source has already been flattened

A PSD can contain only one flattened image layer. Renaming a PNG as PSD or saving it in a PSD wrapper does not recover its old layers. Inspect the layer list to find out what you actually have.

## Reopen the copy you will deliver

Download the PSD with a new filename, reopen it and inspect the layers. If another application receives the file, check that application as well. Keep the original beside the exported image until the handoff is accepted.

## FAQ

### Does the PSD extension guarantee editable text?

No. The document may contain flattened pixels. Inspect the layer type and content.

### Can PNG retain transparent pixels without layers?

Yes. Transparency and editable layers are different properties.

### Should I keep both PSD and PNG?

Keep both when you need an editable working file and a flat preview or final image.
